How the Medical School GPA Calculator Works
Medical school application services recalculate your GPA from your transcript using their own rules, so your application GPA often differs from your school GPA. This calculator supports the three main services: AMCAS for MD schools, AACOMAS for DO schools, and TMDSAS for Texas public schools. Choose your service, enter each course with its grade, credits, and subject, and it computes your Science GPA, Non-Science GPA, and Overall GPA the way that service does.
How the Three Services Differ
The services agree on most things but differ in two important ways:
- Math in science GPA: AMCAS and TMDSAS include Math in the science GPA (called BCPM: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math). AACOMAS excludes Math, using BCP (Biology, Chemistry, Physics only), so your Math grades move into the non-science GPA.
- Plus and minus grades: AMCAS and AACOMAS count plus and minus grades, so an A- is 3.7. TMDSAS strips them to the base letter, so an A- becomes a straight A (4.0) and a C- becomes a C (2.0).
All three count every attempt of a repeated course under current rules, even if your school replaced the grade. That is why entering all attempts matters.
What Counts as a Science Course?
- Biology: general biology, anatomy, physiology, genetics, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, zoology.
- Chemistry: general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry.
- Physics: general physics, astronomy, biophysics.
- Math: calculus, algebra, statistics, biostatistics. Counts as science for AMCAS and TMDSAS, but not AACOMAS.
Psychology, sociology, English, history, computer science, and engineering are non-science. Careful: biochemistry is Chemistry and neuroscience is Biology.
