How to Calculate Your Semester GPA
Your semester GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grades for one term. Each course grade is converted to grade points on a 4.0 scale, multiplied by the course’s credit hours, then all the grade points are added and divided by your total credits for the semester.
- List your courses for this semester.
- Select each grade from the dropdown.
- Enter the credit hours for each course, usually 3 or 4.
- Click Calculate — your semester GPA appears instantly.
How Credit Hours Affect Your GPA
Credit hours matter because they weight your grades. An A in a 4-credit course boosts your GPA more than an A in a 1-credit course. To calculate your grade points for a course, multiply its grade value by its credit hours. For example, a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course earns 12 grade points, while an A (4.0) in a 1-credit lab earns 4 grade points. Your semester GPA is all your grade points divided by all your credits.
The 4.0 GPA Scale
- A / A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0
Frequently Asked Questions
Your semester GPA covers only the courses from one term. Your cumulative GPA averages every course across all your semesters. This tool calculates a single semester. To combine a semester with your existing record, use a cumulative GPA calculator.
Most college courses are 3 credit hours. Science courses with labs are often 4, and some seminars or physical education courses are 1 or 2. A full-time semester is usually 12 to 15 credit hours total.
No. Courses are weighted by credit hours. A grade in a 4-credit course affects your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course. That is why this calculator asks for credit hours rather than just averaging your letter grades equally.
A 3.0 semester GPA is solid, 3.5 or above is strong and often makes the Dean’s List, and 3.7 or higher is excellent. Requirements vary by school, but a 2.0 is usually the minimum needed to stay in good academic standing.
A GPA near 4.0 is an A, around 3.0 is a B, around 2.0 is a C, and around 1.0 is a D. This calculator shows the letter grade equivalent of your semester GPA automatically alongside the number.
