How to Use the Graduation Year Calculator
This calculator works two ways. If you know the student’s current grade, choose “Current Grade,” select the grade, and enter the current school year. If you only know their birthday, choose “Date of Birth” and enter the birth month and year along with your state’s kindergarten cutoff date.
Pick a calculation method — by current grade, or by date of birth.
Enter the details — grade and school year, or birth month and year.
Optionally add a college estimate — adds a projected 4-year college graduation year.
Click Calculate — your graduation class year appears instantly.
How Graduation Year Is Calculated
The US school system runs 13 years: kindergarten plus grades 1 through 12. Children typically start kindergarten in the fall of the year they turn 5, as long as their birthday falls before their state’s cutoff date. Most states use a September 1 cutoff. A child who turns 5 after the cutoff usually waits until the following year, which pushes their graduation back by one year.
From kindergarten, it is 13 years to high school graduation, which takes place in the spring. So a child entering kindergarten in fall 2025 graduates in the Class of 2038.
US High School Grade Names
Freshman — 9th grade, the first year of high school.
Sophomore — 10th grade, the second year.
Junior — 11th grade, when college preparation usually begins.
Senior — 12th grade, the final year, ending with graduation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Class of refers to the year a student graduates, not the year they started. If you graduate in 2028, you are part of the Class of 2028. This is the standard way US schools and colleges refer to graduating groups.
The cutoff date decides whether a child starts kindergarten the year they turn 5 or waits a year. A child born just before the cutoff starts earlier; a child born just after waits a full year. That one difference shifts their entire K-12 timeline and their graduation year by a year, which is why this calculator lets you set your state’s cutoff.
Most US high schools hold graduation ceremonies in May or June, at the end of the spring semester. The exact date varies by school district, but the graduation year shown here refers to that spring.
Some students graduate in three years by taking extra credits or summer classes. This calculator assumes a standard four-year high school path with no skipped or repeated grades. If early graduation is the plan, subtract a year from the result.
This calculator is built around the US K-12 system, where school starts in the fall and there are 13 grades including kindergarten. Other countries use different grade structures and academic calendars, so the result may need adjusting outside the US.
